Writing An Essay - What is an Outline For?First off, let me say that the outline in writing an essay is not only a useful tool to keep you organized and focused in the writing process, but it is also important to the quality of your essay. Without a well-planned outline, your ideas could run out of steam or even veer into sub-par writing. You need to come up with a general idea of what your essay will consist of before you start thinking about writing it. That way, you won't have to go back over your thoughts.What is an outline for? The outline is a basic overview of your ideas, sentences, and paragraphs, showing you where they all are in relation to one another. It does not need to be so detailed that it becomes an encyclopedia, just enough to get you on the right track. In fact, your outline should never become too long, because that will slow you down and may cause you to overlook certain parts.
